the best way to really learn, being you spent a good $3000 dollas on the program, is to buy a few good dvd tutorials. some great ones around for about $100

ok this is what i did and i have gotten really good at it in just under a year. i just played with it, all the time, making models of lots of things, trying all the different things out.
i rarely use tutorials because i have ADHD and i cant follow them lol

Just do the tutorials that came with 3ds max 6. If u just got the trial, and you can only download one tutorial, get the reactor stuff. If u learn how to work with reactor, u can make a max payne 2-alike game!

Hint: To make a ragdoll, right click on the script listener, open it, open the ragdoll file in the 3ds max 6/script folder, and follow ur nose thru the rest. The ragdoll's feet will be at 0X, 0Y, 0Z. Remember set your collision tolerance to 0.004 m.

hey guys i have been using 3ds max for over a year now, and i have never exported anything yet, couse i have just been going through tutorials and fooling around with it. today i just exported my H-K PDW for my HL2 mod then imported it and noticed that it had twice the polys, and some of the objects were really screwed up, like they were really really really smoothened out to the point where some of the polys would turn black. i have looked over everything that might have caused this but everything was fine. i had no overlapping polys or anything. if i imported it and clicked on an object that looked deformed then if i went to modify panel and just as soon as i click on the "editable mesh" modifier, everything went back to normal. if i try exporting again, same thing happens.

Tips on max:

1. go to www.3dtotal.com , www.3dbuzz.com , www.highend3d.com , www.google.ca ; look up lots and lots of tutorials, follow them, and then apply them to your own style as you learn.

2. dont use max, use maya. Most of the industry is using maya these days to develop models for games, even entire levels. Maya is a great tool if you can put up with its quirks.
My brain hurts.
