I am currently lead modeller on a Stargate mod called Stargate: Rebellion and the latest model I had to do was of an M249 SAW Machine Gun. You can check out pics of it at my online modelling portfolio or take a look here. Let me know what you think.

Backfaces aren't rendered anyway, so it won't help as much as you think. I don't see why I can still see an 8 sided barrel, a 9K poly model should have like 12-14 sided cylinders. A lot of that detail is pretty pointless anyway, alpha maps make fine holes, the small disadvantage of only seeing | as an edge instead of | | is negated by the much lower polycount.

EDIT: I really need to stop doing this to people lol

it is both a science and an art lol

very very nice model you have made! its incredibly detailed, but it looks to have too much detail. why waste polygons on detail the player will most likely never notice?
detail like that could easily be painted on the skin. its about making the game perform well on a system, THEN make it look nice within those bounds.

I'm with Maxx.. keep it up.. but keep the polys down..

I relly loved the modell. but it's more of a temporary desktop pic.. when textured..

[edit]
by the way...
I don't know if this is the right forum to post but...
I have a few mod ideas that I want made.. I have no mod experience and suck at coding.. so I hope to find a mod tem willing to mod my idea( if they find it good!!!)

where do I post myu idea???

Thanks for all the compliments. Just so people know, the bullets take up 2500 of those polys rolleyes.gif . The reason I modelled it with so much detail is because there are plenty of other HL2 mods out there with really quality models with stacks of detail and if people checking out our mod cant see that we can model as well as if not better than the competition then they wont be interested. I know plenty of it could be skinned on but I wanted to show that we were as good as the competition.

so its more of an advertisement showpiece kinda thing then right?
thats cool....
but even still, i am personally more impressed by a team that can get their models skinned.

So, you're wasting your time creating too detailed models just to conform to the "industry" standard of crappy high poly models that will lag to hell ingame just so people will like your mod? Sounds like a plan!

"During that Persian Gulf War, I was sitting in my living room, naked, with a can of Budweiser and a three inch stake watching the war, live, on TV. I had a six foot erection with a giant cheese burger on the end of it. I ate so much meat during the war that by the time the war was over three weeks later, I was like, "No no no. We need to keep fighting. Make a couple of stops on our way home from the Persian Gulf. First stop! Vietnam! Surprise the fuck out of those people, huh?"" Denis Leary

Dont get me wrong, I am capable of making low poly models but when we dont have a skinner and everyone elses models look better because they have more detail, I had to up the detail to keep people interested. So far, basically all our mod has is models and no skins. Until this changes, I'll keep modeling with detail.
