Post Carnage Report: Digtal Overload 2006
Neo voice: "Whoa"
Thats the feeling. It was, without a doubt, the best weekend this year, and probably one of the best weekends of my life. I don't really even know where to start. I'll just go in chronological order. Oh, and this is directed twords my xanga, and I'll probably copy this to different forums, so if your reading from one of those places, take into account that this was intended for a blog. Not gonna write 10 different stories here.
Dave made a list off all the cool stuff that happened, so I'll use that as a guideline. We set out friday morning, arriving at Yanni's house at approximatly 9:30, and left with the car packed at 10. And believe me, the car was crammed... the back held a 19" crt, a 19" LCD, two desktops, a suitcase, 3 bags of clothes, and two backpacks full of cables. In the backseat we had Yanni himself, his laptop, 2 laptop bags, 9 cans of Jolt, and an eggcrate of food. Up front was me, the dozens of random papers, Dave, his laptop, and yea... thats about it. Yanni brought his 200w power AC car inverter thing, which we hooked both laptops up to. Yea, he actually tripped or blew out my AC adapter. No great loss though. So we just streammed music off their laptops right to my car speakers... very cleaver. Somewhere on I-95N we stopped at a McDonalds for some food and restroom break. Next stop was in Providence, which we ran into a bit of traffic. Couldn't find our hotel so we stopped at a nearby hotel and asked for directions to the Johnson and Whales hotel... which was like 2 streets back, less than 3 miles away. Got there, unpacked, checked in and got into the room. It had a couch, which folded out into a bed which was really cool, so Yanni slept on that while Dave and I got the beds. The hotel had shatley wireless but hardline was good. I took a shower cause I held disgusting after driving 6 hours. We left around 5:50 for the convention. Got semi-lost in the city trying to find the damn place. But alas, we found the north parking garage which was $8 till midnight... and after midnight they charge you another $8.... too bad we didn't know that till 1am:(. Oh well. So we get up there and you have to check in everything at once. So Yanni and I made two trips back to the car to get towers and monitors while Dave watched the stuff. Checked in, staff was really friendly, didn't have any problems. Got some badass badges to wear too. Got in, and picked a table with 3 open chairs near the far wall. Set all our gear up. Dave had zero problems, him using Yanni's laptop. I had a bit o trouble getting the network, same with Yanni, but it was sorted out in about 20min. Another thing... my mouse stopped working. I replaced the batteries 5 min ago, and now it works fine. So for the whole convention I used Yanni's Logitech mouse which was AMAZING. He used his logitech wired laser mouse... very nice. We all got up and running in no time. Gamed and did shit still 1 am, which is when we left.
Lol, I remember the first time we got a glance at Tim (Buckley, the main event, haha) and we were estatic... and he was right next to our section! Oh yes, the tables were divided into seperate sections; A, B, C, D etc. So were in C... C section. (let it sink in... ah yes, BABIES!). So yea, in games we wrote "[c section] tLove", which was really amusing. Later that became our signature call, same with the Canadians (Osiras and Swiffer) during the CSS tourny. Also, the guys controlling the even set up this chat/sharing program called DC++, which I had never heard of. You can see eveybody registered with it, and if they wish to share files they write down a label and it shows how much is being shared. I just put up my videos folder, which was 5gigs. I saw a few ppl with 200+ gigs... and one guy, I will never forget the name, Onilink67, with his 190gigs of Porn. Wow. People would tell eveybody they were setting up servers for certian games too.
I started quoting the bash.org quote about "get up, get on up, get up, get on up, and dance!
\-<" and I got booted. The exact message sent to me from the patch server:
<PatchServer> You are being kicked because: I invent a device to stab people in the face over the network. You were the first test.
So I got a ton a movie, music, videos, etc etc. We played a bunch of CS, met a few people, and generally tried to take in the gravity of the situation. About 2/3 of the people were there already, approx. 270ppl. They had between 300-400 people, I never heard an exact number.
So went back the the hotel (somehow found the way, in the dark, running on very little sleep and very tired from the whole day.
Wake up at 7am. We left by 8:30, having a crappy continental breakfast, and getting situated at DO around 9am. For a majority of the day we played CSS. I also played, Worms Armagetton (sp?) with two other guys, like 10 min of Battlefield 2, DoDS with the candians for about an hour near the end of the day, some TrackMania Nations, and a little bit of HL2 deathmatch. All was fun. Our popeyes chicken for lunch was awesome. Eating the leftovers that night and the next day was funny too. Jolt was surging through our system. I kept a dedicated server up (dedicated tLoveServer (defaults)) for a good few hours, having 24 ppl playing at its peak. Felt good too, knowing my PC could handle it, and I could still play with good graphics. They were also calling out door prizes all day, but sadly we didn't win anything. Yanni played some intence Super Smash Brothers Melee, but lost to Link, heh. Had fun though. Dave and I wandered around taking plenty of pictures, documenting the weekend.
BTW, our first match in the CSS tourny, with the candaians... we owned. It was so much fun with everybody communicating fluidly, did an excellent job. Sure, the second match we got whipped, but we knew we would loose eventually. The DJ was taking music requests too. Does anybody know if they played Andrew WK? I requested them at some point and I saw the DJ_Server take the albumn from Dave, but never heard it.
Dowloaded more stuff via DC++. Left BEFORE midnight, to save $8. Got back to the hotel and crashed. Fuckin exhusted.
Rose at 7 again and rolled out by 8:30. No problems checking out from the hotel either. Got to DO. Played mostly the same games and chilled. Another SSBM tourny went up, Yanni was in the first round, but lost to Ness in the second round. If we had time, we would've signed up for the HL2Deathmatch tourny, but we were worried about cutting time short. I wanted to leave by 2, to make it home by 9. Tim (buckley) FINALLY came back from where ever the hell he was all morning, and we finally got to introduce ourselves. I mentioned to him about my CAD etchings on my case, and he was just like "YOUR THAT GUY!" haha, apparently it got put in his list of things to talk about, which natually is under a pile of games. Anyway, he came over (with his huge posse, lol) and checked it out. Signed the window case, and a few of our CAD books. It's pretty cool talking to the man behind all that was there, of course with the help of many others.
After that only one other huge thing happened. We yanked all the pictures out of Yannis camera and I put them up on the DC++ with a few blatent notices that they were avalible for download for only about 20min since we had to leave shortly. There were 180 mb of photos.... and I uploaded over 3 gigs worth to 15+ people. Insance. Dan from gameoverdrive asked to use them online, and he put ALL of them up, including the first 100+ that were taken before we got to DO... but its all good. Now people know what the trip was like, ahaha. So yea, huge success there. Around 1:30 we were packing up, and by 2:00 we were out of there. We got a some cool CAD stickers too.
It was just amazing. I don't really have much else to say. Security was good, didn't feel worried at all about having all my stuff there. Met lots of cool people, saw some awesome cases, met Tim, shared media with hundreds of people.... just excellent. Only one problem.... NEXT YEAR IS SO FAR AWAY!!! ::sigh::. Oh yea, fix steam next year, thats all i'll say. Drive back was long, and through the rain/fog. However we made it back in one piece. I would have pictures up in this post but game overdrive is changing servers and everything is offline. I will post promtly once they are back online. Untill then check out http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com
for the latest "post DO'06 updates" with pictures etc.
Thanks you so much Tim, sponcers, and of course the fans for making it such an awesome time.
Tim - tLove (tlove2487)
Yanni - DemonStrate (transgenic86)
Dave - Toasty Oats (gmodarkside)
in other news, the trooper brought the wrong papers to court, so I just got $140 back into my pocket (enough to pay 3/4 of my trip to DO... if you want more info, IM me)
