Zimbabwe

29 June 2008 - 10:30 AM

Robert Mugabe has shocked everyone by winning the election in Zimbabwe. It is a stunning achievement considering all the odds were against him.

QUOTE
"The returns show that we are winning convincingly, that we have won in all the 26 constituencies in Harare, an MDC stronghold where we won in only one constituency in March. That is the trend," Mr Mugabe said in footage broadcast on state television.

It reminds me of my school days in which I would always come third in the running race - a great achievement until you considered the fact that there were only three people in the race.

Sweeney Todd

This is a great movie. Even if you don't like musicals, I'm certain you'll like this. Definitely one of Tim Burton's best.

Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman are awesome in it. Johnny Depp is a really talented actor but he is popular for the wrong reasons (Pirates of the Caribbean) rather than the right ones (e.g. Finding Neverland).

No Country for Old Men

Saw it today. Amazing.

People told me beforehand that they thought the ending was disappointing. At first I thought the story hadn't been properly concluded but then I thought about it and the story had been concluded. It's just not the most obvious conclusion, and it requires you to think about it a little. You know how there's always one guy at the cinema who wants to show that he knows the movie's about to end, so he starts moving about and putting his coat on while it's still playing? Not in this movie.

iTunes movie rentals

Now this is the day* I've been waiting for for a long time.

I can now rent high def movies and play them back on my computer (not in a web page), and even take them with me when I leave the house. I do not need to wait for discs to arrive in the mail, nor do I have to worry about sending them back. I just press one button and I can start playing it before it has finished downloading (almost instantly with SD rentals).

I do not need to purchase DVDs unless I really like the movie, nor do I have to find somewhere to put the discs or worry about them getting damaged. If I had an Apple TV unit, I could do all of this from my couch without even bothering to get up. If I want to save money, I also have the option of a cheaper SD version.

Seems like they've thought of everything (except 1080p but 720p is more than enough for me).

* Yes, I know it was yesterday but I'm in a different time zone wink.gif

I Am Legend

01 January 2008 - 11:43 PM

Just saw this movie. It was so damn tense. I was wriggling awkwardly in my seat as I watched it because they would draw the tension out to crazy lengths. And it wasn't one of those movies where there's a guy just firing at dumb mutants throwing themselves at him. These enemies were SMART and there were several times when I thought they were a lot smarter than the main character.

In summary: go see this movie if you haven't already.

P.S. Forgot to mention that it reminded me a lot of Children of Men. If you liked CoM, I think you will like this. It's not as good but it has several of the qualities that made CoM such a great movie.
